In February 2007 we were visited by Dr.Christoph Heinz & Mrs.Joly Heinz. They were financially responsible for the extension to the old operation Room.
The Emmaus Hospital project has two full-fledged Eye Units, one at Palamaner and the other at Kuppam.
Palamaner being a very backward area economically and socially, we realized the desperate need for Community Eye Care for the curable blind (1992). In children, we have done several major door-to-door and school surveys to detect night blindness, low vision and causative factors such as malnutrition, diabetes etc. Similarly, the cataract rate was also very high due to such causative factors in adults.
Preventive interventions are being actively continued for both children and adults. Corrective spectacles, cataract and other operations are being performed on a weekly basis.
Today, thanks to the financial and technical support from the
Christoffel Blinden Mission of Germany, we are able to provide adequate eye care service to thousands of people each year. (

The Para-medics of the Emmaus Hospital perform field surveys which are responsible for identifying several eye problems besides cataracts and other serious problems of Vitamin-A deficiency in children, thus preventing blindness. The hospitals at Palamaner and Kuppam are well equipped with operating microscopes, slit lamps and other necessary hospital equipment.
Special “
village eye camps” are conducted with the help of different “clubs” with over 2000 cataract operations and intra-ocular lens transplants are done each year besides other operations like glaucoma, corneal injuries, dacrocystites and more.
As our partner, CBM partially supports not only our activities but a part of the Eye Staff’s salary as well.
This child had no vision since birth.
