Incentives to Leprosy Patients Undergoing Reconstructive Surgery January & February 2009
For the first time in the history of leprosy, the National Leprosy Program (NLEP) of India in a bid to help patients overcome their financial problems in supporting their families while they were admitted in hospital for reconstructive surgery, had decided to give a cash incentive of Rs.5000/- per patient.
At a function hosted on the 6th April 2009, by Dr.A.J.W.Jacob, the Director & RC Surgeon of The Emmaus Swiss Leprosy Project Palamaner – Chittoor Dist. AP, this most applaudable gesture from the GOI was made into a reality when the special Invitees, Dr.Nazeeruddin, Addl.DM&HO (Lep & AIDs) of Chittoor Dist., Dr.Vanisree, Addl. DM & HO (Lep & AIDs) of Kurnool District & Mr.John Kurian George, CEO & Director Emmaus Trust India, distributed the Rs.5000/- incentive to each of 13 patients who had completed their surgery during the months of January & February 2009.
The meeting was well attended by members of the Press, Leprosy & AIDs Government Workers, Staff & of course the patients. We now look forward to the continuity of this program in the months to follow.
