Research

Several of our field based studies have contributed to scientific knowledge:
In 1981, we were the first in the whole world to give Multi-drug therapy for leprosy with Rifampicin 1500mgs once a month supervised & Clofazimine 50mgs & Dapsone 100mgs daily for cases that were highly positive & for those not responding to the conventional Dapsone mono-therapy in those days.
In 1988, we proved the efficacy of an “Integrated Health Service in the Epidemiology of leprosy”
In 1988, we also showed in a comparative study that Rifampicin 1500mgs as opposed to the WHO dose of 600mgs is more effective resulting in a faster cure, less reactions & less relapse.
In 1989, we were also the first to describe the “Flu-syndrome” in intermittent once monthly by Rifampicin therapy.
In 1992, Dapsone induced peripheral motor poly neuropathy in leprosy was reported for the first time.
In 1993, we reported on the use of “Topical Phenytoin “as an adjunct in the healing of leprosy tropic ulcers.
In 1993, two papers were produced: 1) Towards Affordable Cataract surgery in rural India. 2) Ophthalmic Headache. .
In 1995, we also presented a paper on “An Evaluation of the Future Role of NGOs working in Leprosy”
In 1996, a paper was produced on ECE cataract surgery done cheaply, quickly & well
